Photography History

In the above picture we see one of Victorian Bradford's most significant buildings, the Wool Exchange, known for its Gothic Revival architecture and role of keeping the city prosperous. This picture was taken by topographical photographer Francis Frith.

Hannah Starkey, the photographer of this photo, is know for her enigmatic, staged photographs of wide spaces. In the picture above I think the young woman is looking at the mirror and accepting she's ageing. The images meaning is up to interpretation.

Horst P. Horst was famous for his fashion photography, work with vogue, and his mastering of lights, shadows and poses. He's also known for his sometimes experimental and abstract approach.

This picture was taken by photographer Harold Edgerton. He was the first to use stroboscopic lighting to capture fast movement. The stroboscope can illuminate a subject with repeated and rapid bursts of light.

Simon Norfolk, known for his photographs of ruined landscapes and buildings, has taken this picture of a balloon seller in front of what was once a teahouse. His photographs often featured rich sunlight, sometimes including mountain ranges. His pictures are reminiscent of romantic history painters of the 18th and 19th centuries. The low viewpoint of the photograph emphasizes the outline of the building. The only bright colors being the balloons make them a focus of attention.
