10 facts

  • It's available in 190 countries, making it almost available in every country.

  • VPNs are used to watch exclusive content in a specific country. Netflix constantly counters this by finding new ways to block VPNs

  • ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • As of May, 2021 Netflix had a market cap of over $216 billion

  • Netflix was one of the first streaming services available as an app. With its debut on Apple products in 2010

  • In 2017, Netflix won its first Oscar. As of October 2021, it's had 36 Oscar nominations

Netflix is most popular with Generation X; these were born between 1965-1980. They may be more interested in Netflix as it can be a program used for the whole family; therefore, saving them money, with countless entertainment and shows for a vast age range.

Channel 4 is the most popular amongst millennials, born between 1981-1996. This might be due to the fact they often channel surf and Channel 4 has plenty of good shows. If they need something specific, they can then choose to watch Netflix which, if owned by their parents, it wouldn't make sense to buy it twice.

On the other hand, Baby Boomers prefer BBC and ITV, but also Channel 4. I think Netflix isn't in their top 10 due to the fact that, it wasn't available when they were children. They have gotten used to their favorite channels and know the times of when programs will be broadcast. This makes streaming services not a priority for them.

This task was to research audience. We had to make sure our products aligned with Netflix's target audience considering they were the company we would be working with. It was important that we didn't create something outside their parameters as it would be rejected otherwise. By having a general idea of our audience, we can improve our work to create something that the majority will enjoy.

Our project focuses on a true crime documentary so our audience would enjoy those. Since Netflix is popular with generation X, they would be the main target audience.

Kai conducted research which was used for this project. She gave us information about Tracey's early life, the night of the murder and what happened after the murder. Despite this, I wanted to further research this topic to get a better understanding of the story. To do this I used some of the links below. They provided me with insight that helped me write the script.

In a source it is said that this was not the first time Tracey had attacked another man. At age 15, Tracey slashed his fingers and broke his nose. It says she did this to try to get close to her grandmother which plays a vital role in Tracey's development. According to Kai Tracey was emotionally abused by her grandmother which was cynical, manipulative, and self-centred. The grandmother's name later became the name of one of Tracey's alters, Avril.

While creating this post, I discovered that the bank card might've not been planted by one of Tracey's alters but was instead stored away by Baldock as this believed it was his. Although we can't say for certain, I believe this is an interesting change of perspective.

Unfortunately, I could not find the original interviews however, the sources provide some statements from Tracey. In these she describes, in graphic detail, what happened at the crime scene: "He was making a gargling sound. I knew the blood was coming out of his mouth..." Later, she told the media she enjoyed the notoriety: "It's hard to be famous, isn't it? A legend in my own mind."

It's crucial to look at existing documents as these can give you ideas and inspiration for parts you could utilise in your own projects.

For this task, I chose to research the TV series "The Stranded". The genres are adventure, drama and mystery. The trailer follows the codes and conventions of these genres. It gives the audience a sense of adventure when he's looking to explore the city and when they get stranded on the island. We see the mystery when we question: "What is happening in this island?" For the drama genre we have the death of the father and the devastation caused by the tsunami.

The poster shown gives a sense of dread as the school is destroyed right after their graduation.

The show is aimed at teens and older, this can be seen on the above photo; the characters are also quite young, and the setting piques the curiosity of teens as, it's a mystery you want to know the answer to.

The way they give us the synopsis and tagline makes us question what will happen to the students. As said before they had just graduated, and now they are stuck with no access to the outside world. What would you do in this predicament?

Multi media is useful for bringing attention to a variety of audiences, not everyone uses the same websites or digital devices. The media however, has to be cohesive. You cannot have a comedy style movie poster and then a horror style trailer. That'd confuse individuals.

Arcane

Merchandise

Arcane has various merch, as you can see above. Some had already been created before the release of the series, as it is based on a game; however most of these pieces were made to promote the show. Some of my personal favorites being the accessories.

Posters

I found these on their official website. Even though they had other posters with all the characters, I liked these with every individual character; I found them quite captivating. These give the viewer insight on the most important characters.

Billboards

Billboards are very important for people not familiar with the show/movie, as these can make all the difference in a person's decision. If it looks appealing and interesting a viewer, intrigued by it, is prompted to watch it.

Social Media

Social Media is an important platform as it allows users to get info on their favorite topics. If someone wanted to research more about Arcane or learn some obscure, but interesting facts social media is the place to go. The official account often shares behind the scenes and insight on development.

Website

Their website has proved invaluable when searching for information, there you can find: Trailers, Synopsis of the Worlds, Behind the Scenes, Announcements, Sneak Peeks, etc.

Trailers/Announcements

Trailers are just as, if not more, important as sneak peek teaser photos. They show us what the overarching storyline will look like, it introduces us to the main characters and helps build tension and suspense; creating hype for the viewer.

TV Commercial

I was quite surprised by the discovery of this commercial. Commercials are important for people who are watching a show and are stuck waiting for the commercial break to end. They might be looking at their phone to pass the time and, if the sound catches their attention and the imagery further grasps their interest, they will remember it and are more prone to watch it.

Radio

Once again, I was surprised when I discovered they had publicized on radio. This is not completely unexpected, considering our previous entry, but surprising nonetheless. Radio is an important media, as you often use it when travelling. When listening to music on a radio sometimes you can't be bothered to change station, so whenever a break comes on you're stuck with it. These breaks can be either can be interviews or ads, both equally annoying, however you might end up paying attention to whatever is being promoted. If it catches your attention then the promotion has done its job.

Press

Press packs. Think newspapers, magazines. This type of media is the most useful for people with no access to internet or a digital device, however most articles are now available in digital format, as well.
